HISTORY of Staygripped Golf Training
Aid
- The great Ben Hogan, 1912-1997, winner of 10 major titles and
one of only 5 golfers to win all 4 Grand Slam events, explains
that, “Good golf begins with a good grip.” This statement
is echoed by many golf professionals and coaches.
- Many golfers sub-consciously re-grip the club during the golf
swing. “Grip slippage is a guaranteed game-wrecker. The
most common point of loosening the hands is the top of the backswing.
This forces a re-gripping of the shaft, and is almost certain
to alter clubface alignment.” – Jack Nicklaus, Golf
My Way.
- The Staygripped Training Aid was developed in the UK in 2002
by its founder Paul Wilkinson. The concept is a simple one: most
golfers have problems with their grip at some stage in their golfing
careers; the Training Aid is a method by which all golfers of
all abilities can improve their grip throughout the swing, thereby
improving their ball-striking and ultimately their handicaps.
- The concept was to provide a solution to the problem of re-gripping
the golf club through the use of a Velcro grip, retro-fitted to
a golf club, and golf gloves with strategically positioned Velcro
pads. When gripping the club, the gloves would form a bond with
the Velcro grip.
- The concept was discussed with several hundred golfers - professionals
and amateurs. The overwhelming consensus of opinion was that the
concept was a great idea and should be developed.
- Initial samples were sourced from manufacturers in the Far East
and demonstrated to a large number of professional golfers until
a final specification was agreed.
- After a year of research, product testing and amendments to
specification, the StayGripped Training Aid was born.
